Why Buildkite exists

Unblock developer innovation by delivering fast, flexible, and secure CI/CD.

What we're building

Buildkite delivers a hybrid continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform that combines a cloud-hosted control plane with self-hosted build agents, enabling teams to run builds and tests on their own infrastructure while retaining centralized orchestration, observability and security. Its platform includes pipelines, a test analytics engine, package registries and hosted agents for Linux and macOS, serving engineering and DevOps teams at startups and large enterprises that require high-performance, flexible build and release pipelines. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Melbourne, Buildkite supports tens of thousands of users and is used by leading organizations across cloud, consumer and AI sectors. The company has grown through product-led adoption and commercial sales, announced a Series A in 2020 and a Series B in 2022, and counts customers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Uber, Airbnb, Canva, Shopify and others among its user base. Buildkite operates a globally distributed, remote team and offers both self-hosted and hosted agent options to meet enterprise security and scale needs.

The problem

Large engineering teams face slow, brittle or inflexible CI systems that become bottlenecks for shipping software; many managed CI offerings force customers to run workloads in vendor-controlled environments, creating security, compliance and performance trade-offs. Buildkite solves this by decoupling orchestration from compute—providing a cloud control plane while letting customers run build agents on their own infrastructure—so teams keep control of secrets, scale, and cost while improving build speed and reliability.

Why now

Enterprises and frontier engineering teams increasingly need CI systems that handle massive parallel workloads, monorepos and the higher velocity introduced by automated code-generation and AI-assisted development. Buildkite’s hybrid model aligns with that shift by delivering cloud orchestration with on-premises or customer-controlled execution, meeting rising demands for performance, security and observability. Recent product expansions—test analytics, package management and hosted agent offerings—reflect growing market adoption of composable, hybrid CI solutions.
