About

Hone builds handheld spectrometers and machine-learning spectroscopy software for in-field measurement of soil carbon and agrifood properties, supporting grain moisture and protein, liquid food analysis, and regulatory-compliant carbon testing.

Mission

Newcastle, New South Wales–based Hone develops handheld spectrometer hardware and machine‑learning software for in‑field measurement of soil carbon and other agrifood properties. The company began with moisture and protein measurement in grains and oilseeds and has expanded into liquid analysis for food processing; its Hone Carbon subsidiary focuses on soil carbon testing. Hone sells devices for a one‑off fee and a subscription for access to spectroscopy models and its software platform. The startup claims its spectroscopy approach produces results in the same format as conventional labs while being up to five times cheaper and delivering near‑real‑time readings. Hone Carbon’s products meet Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator requirements for ACCU generation and the business currently serves about 10 customers, including CSIRO, Loam Bio, AgriProve and Limagrain, and runs farm pilots. The company says it will use new backing to scale production from building and deploying tens of devices a year to hundreds and thousands, and to expand workshop and support infrastructure.
