About
Hemideina is a Melbourne-based medtech startup developing the Hera Wireless Implant, a miniature in-ear bud plus cochlear electrode inspired by insect auditory systems for implantable hearing augmentation.
Mission
Hemideina is developing the Hera Wireless Implant, a very small implantable hearing device positioned as an almost imperceptible alternative to traditional cochlear hearing aids. The technology is inspired by New Zealand’s Wellington tree weta, an insect with an auditory range comparable to humans. The company was founded in 2017 by research scientists Dr Kate Lomas and Dr Elizabeth Williams. Hemideina is actively continuing development of the device and advancing its product work. Financially, the company completed a $4 million fundraising round and earlier raised $1 million in February of the same year from a group of investors. The recent capital comes from a slew of angel investors and high-net-worth individuals, including repeat contributors to the February raise. The startup was founded in February 2017 by research scientists Dr Kate Lomas and Dr Elizabeth Williams after they won Australia's MedTech's Got Talent competition and completed that accelerator program. Hemideina previously secured $60,000 in seed funding and has now raised $1 million in Series A funding to advance development and commercialisation.
