About

ARIA Research develops a non-invasive, wearable bionic-vision system that uses sound to let blind and low-vision users perceive their surroundings.

Mission

ARIA Research is building the world’s first commercially scalable, non-invasive bionic vision system, a wearable device that translates visual information into sound so blind and low-vision individuals can identify objects, people and signage and navigate environments. Originating from collaborations with peak blind organisations since its 2019 inception, the system already enables users to locate objects, wayfind and avoid obstacles in both laboratory and real-world tests. Because it is non-surgical, ARIA sidesteps the medical risks, lengthy adaptation periods and user fatigue seen in implanted bionic eyes. The company’s upcoming pilot clinical trial, funded by a recently awarded federal grant, will formally validate safety, utility and effectiveness in a small cohort of blind participants. Beyond the trial, ARIA plans to engage Australia’s NDIS to build a global health-economic case and position the product for large-scale reimbursement. Financially, the firm has secured A$1.5 million in non-dilutive CTCM funding and has now opened a separate investment round to support commercialisation.
